Our team was proud to represent the International Community at the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference, organised by the OSCE and Malta’s 2024 Chairpersonship. This 10-day event brought together OSCE member states and representatives of civil society from across the region to address pressing topics such as the protection of democratic institutions, media freedom, and the essential role of civil society engagement. One of the focal points of the discussions was the Russian aggression against Ukraine, highlighting the serious impact this ongoing conflict continues to have on human rights and security in Europe.Amid these urgent conversations, our delegation contributed a particular focus on the critical role of youth engagement in democratic processes. We believe that young people, who make up 25% of the EU population, must be at the heart of shaping the future of democracy in Europe. Youth organisations are uniquely positioned to foster deeper participation in vital democratic processes such as elections, and this begins with actively involving young people in election observation. By observing elections, youth not only learn about transparency, fairness, and accountability but also inspire their peers to take a more active role in democracy.At the conference, we highlighted the importance of ensuring that youth not only have access to information about elections but are also active participants in the process itself. Empowering them to engage in these roles can create a more inclusive, youth-driven democracy, ensuring the sustainability of democratic institutions at local, regional, and national levels. This approach aligns with the OSCE’s broader goals of defending democracy and human rights across the region.Our discussions, alongside other civil society representatives, underscored the importance of defending election integrity, tackling disinformation, and supporting human rights defenders and journalists. On 20 September 2024, we visited NATO Headquarters in Brussels, the heart of one of the world’s most important military alliances dedicated to ensuring collective security and political stability. We also had the chance to tour the impressive NATO building and gain firsthand insight into where crucial decisions on global security are made.Our meetings kicked off with a session led by Dr. Petr Lunák, Deputy Head of the Public Diplomacy Division, who shared key takeaways from the recent Washington Summit. The discussion focused on NATO’s support for Ukraine, increased military spending, and expanding partnerships with other regions, sparking a deeper conversation on NATO’s political agenda and its response to global challenges.Later, we met with Mihaela Rosu, Lead Officer for Youth Engagement, to explore ways NATO can improve communication with young people and the wider public, making international security topics more accessible. 📣 Today we are extremely excited to announce that for our closing lecture of the online module of the IC Explore the EU Brussels 2024 project scheduled for Wednesday 28/08/2024, Alexander Borum will be our expert in European Security! 🤩🎙️🇪🇺📝 Alexander Borum is a seasoned expert in security affairs, specializing in security sector governance, reform, capacity building, and security policy. With a wealth of experience as a deployable crisis management expert, he is closely associated with Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Peace and Stabilisation Response. Alexander has recently served on the front lines in Somalia, where he played a pivotal role as the EU Advisor on Political and Security Affairs.
Alexander’s work is at the cutting edge of European security. Having recently completed a prestigious Policy Leader Fellowship at the European University Institute, he focused on advancing European Common Security and Defence Policy, particularly in alignment with the EU Strategic Compass. Currently, he contributes his expertise as a Consultant on Hybrid Threats for the EU Institute for Security Studies.
Alexander holds an Advanced Master of Science in International Relations & Diplomacy, a Master in International Leadership and Negotiations, and a Bachelor of Social Science. His primary interests include climate security, emerging threats, conflict management, asymmetric conflicts, hybrid warfare, and the diplomacy required in fragile states.We are looking forward to his intervention! It will considerably enrich our participants’ knowledge and will therefore represent a great opportunity for growth and skills building! 🤩🇪🇺P.s. The great news is not just this!
